Sanford Stadium: The Only College Football Stadium with a Mascot Burial Site On-Site

Sanford Stadium, home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs, holds a truly unique distinction in college sports:
It is the only major college football stadium in the United States that features an on-site, active cemetery dedicated solely to its beloved live mascot — the English Bulldog known as Uga.

Why This Tradition Is Unlike Any Other

Tucked into the southwest corner of the stadium near Gate 9, the Uga Mausoleum is a marble-fronted resting place that honors every bulldog mascot in the program's history. Each Uga is laid to rest in a custom-designed vault, symbolizing their lasting legacy on and off the field.

Here’s what makes this tradition so exceptional:

🏛️ 1. A State Funeral—For a Dog

When an Uga passes away, the university hosts an official funeral often attended by university dignitaries, students, alumni, and fans. The ceremony garners national media coverage and is treated with the same reverence as any distinguished figure in Georgia athletics.

🏆 2. Career Highlights Carved in Bronze

Each Uga is memorialized with a custom bronze plaque featuring their “career stats,” including win-loss records, championships, and notable achievements. For example, Uga X (nicknamed “Que”) was recently buried with recognition for back-to-back national championships — a testament to his time leading the Dawgs.

🐾 3. Game Day Traditions That Touch the Heart

Before kick-off on Saturdays, it’s common to see Georgia fans leaving flowers, dog treats, or memorabilia at the mausoleum. This heartfelt gesture pays tribute to the “spirit of the Dawgs” and has become a cherished part of the game day experience in Athens.

👨👩👦👦 4. A Family Legacy Like No Other

Every Uga since the tradition began in 1956 has come from the Seiler family of Savannah, Georgia. This multi-generational commitment to preserving the Uga bloodline is unmatched in college athletics, and has become a key part of the Georgia Bulldogs’ identity.

Can You Visit It?

Yes! The Uga Mausoleum is publicly visible from the West End Zone Bridge in Sanford Stadium. If you're in Athens, Georgia, it's a must-see spot for Bulldog fans and college football history buffs alike.
